Padre Island

The longest barrier island in the world, offering everything from untouched, 4x4 coastal wilderness to vibrant resort-town energy on the Gulf of Mexico.

Overview

Stretching for over 100 miles along the Gulf of Mexico, Padre Island is the longest barrier island in the world and a deeply iconic slice of the Texas coast. This isn't just a single destination; it's a massive stretch of sand that caters to two entirely different coastal lifestyles, separated by a gloriously untamed wilderness. At the southern tip, South Padre Island brings the tropical resort energy, legendary beach bars, and world-class kiteboarding. Up north, the vibe is a bit more laid-back, blending into the surf culture of Corpus Christi. But the real magic of Padre Island lies right in the middle at the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS). Here, the pavement ends and the salty adventure begins. If you’ve got a four-wheel-drive rig, you can drop your tire pressure and cruise down 60 miles of raw, undeveloped coastline known as South Beach. It’s a place where the cell service drops off, campfires crackle against the coastal breeze, and you can cast a line directly into the surf for redfish and speckled trout. Whether you’re showing up before dawn to watch Kemp's ridley sea turtle hatchlings race to the waves, chasing the wind across the hyper-saline Laguna Madre, or just posting up with a cold beer and your truck tailgate down, Padre Island is the Texas coast at its most authentic. It’s big, it’s wild, and it severely rewards those willing to kick it into four-wheel drive.
